Now if you are reading this because you got your first job, then allow me to congratulate you. Good work in passing the job application and interview process. You had gotten far now. You fought the job-snatching-gladiator battle and came out victor. I think you should take a deep breath and relax. Treat yourself with someone nice, could be a peaceful night reading a book, buying yourself a nice mousse cake, treat your friends/family to dinner... just enjoy yourself. You deserve it.
For fellow university students, I highly encourage you to get an internship. So what if you will graduate a semester later? Trust me, that experience you gain will be invaluable. You can always do like me. I don't have summer vacation. I basically study for one semester and work the other. By work, I mean internship. I'm going to share some of my experience with you guys.
So I am starting my second internship at a big company. Pretty exciting. And pretty darn scary too! I am so nervous I can't sleep. In fact, I am so stressed about what my future boss and coworkers will think of me that I started planning my wardrobe 1 week in advance and started having imaginary conversation in the shower. Yes. It's normal to be stressed out. It's like the first day of school. Remember how nervous you are? It's the same thing for work too!
But the wonderful part of FIRST DAY is that nobody expects anything from you. You are probably just a new face there for them to gossip later over lunch. So there you go, have a good first impression. FIRST DAY is when you get to show people how good of a listener you are, how friendly and how you will do your job right. You just have to sit there and be pretty and pay attention to your training. YUP! Training! Ask questions and take notes. I cannot stress how important note-taking is. You should know by now after going to school that taking notes helps a lot when it comes to your exams! Your brain doesn't remember things being said 3 days ago but your papers might.
I had my first 2 days of training outside of my internship period. It was awesome because I was trained by an intern who is leaving and I am replacing her. It was a bit easier to talk to because we are of the same age, same job orientation.
Be on time! By god, I was there 40 min early. I waited outside on a picnic table for 10 mins before I gathered enough courage to walk in. Apparently, my boss saw me from the window and LOL-ed. Gosh, that was embarrassing!
She showed me around the office and introduced me to some senior managers. I totally froze! I was so stressed I just grimaced awkwardly at them. They must be thinking I'm a nutso. AUUUGHHH~
After that I had 8 hours straight of training. The intern was drilling all the info in me. I was kinda VERY overwhelmed. I tried to keep up but it was like "Woooaahhh what did you just say? No, like 5 sentences ago."
My boss told me to take it easy and she wasn't expecting anything from me on my first day of actual work. Still, I am going to research as much info about my position and exceed their expectation!
